The ‘Rewild’ collection was inspired by Joyce Wang’s experiences in the medieval town of Aubusson, four hours south of Paris, the centre of France’s traditional weaving culture and steeped in generations of craftsmanship. The collection focuses on the discovery of decomposition and preservation; the natural rock formations, masonry and lime plaster of Aubusson; the study of fossilised plants; the demystification of traditional tapestry weaving methods; and the making of cuts and slits in woven yarn layers to reveal nature’s secret strata.
Capturing the graphical shapes of the town’s bold stonework and lime plaster, an outline of woven metal and wool depicts a cross-cut of a stone. Cutting the block of stone across the vein allows large fragments of colourful variations to be extracted. White mohair blends in a softness referencing the evidence of decay, adding a layer of ephemeral morning dew. Arriving in two colour stories of Peach/Coral or Grey/Green, the Mohair is interwoven with Wool, Silk, White Gold Lurex and Silver tencel, and embellished with contrasting metals to add an etched technique representing the ‘veins’ of the earth.
