Julie Mathias

Julie is co-founder with Wolfgang Kaeppner of the design agency WOKrea, which is emerging as a design force in leading museums and art galleries around the world. These include the MAD Museum in New York, the Design Museum in London, the Holon Design Museum and MOCA in Taipei. A graduate in Product Design from the Royal College of Art in London, Julie enjoys questioning our self-constructed environments, shaking up our imaginary worlds and shifting them. Working on the border between art and design, WOK also questions the “functionality” of design. All of his work expands the understanding of objects. Sometimes the pieces reveal a function in an unusual way, it is radicalized to enhance the emotional quality of the piece.

WOKrea creates engaged works including large urban installations such as Night Watch and also invents limited edition objects. Alice Rawsthorn, former director of the London Design Museum, says that using WOKrea products ‘is like embarking on a design adventure’. Her passion for design naturally inspired Julie Mathias to try her hand at creating rugs by collaborating with PINTON. (coming soon)
